Kamawanu is a specialist maker of Tenugui, a hand-dyed rectangular cloth traditionally used in Japan as a functional, everyday, household item. Produced using the “Chusen” hand-dyeing technique, dating to the Meiji Period, its still used by today by craftspeople who value its refined textures and visual qualities.

Since its establishment in 1987, Kamawanu has developed more than 500 different Tenugui patterns, bringing new life to the “Chusen” hand-dyeing tradition. Following on from our recent Tenugui demonstration and shop in shop we have a selection of almost 50 designs at the store to choose from with a smaller selection online here.
